This year, I completed training in Jiao’s Scalp Acupuncture, a modern acupuncture technique that capitalizes on the neuroanatomy of the brain. Discovered fairly recently for an acupuncture method – about 60 yrs ago – it combines traditional needle techniques with our growing body of knowledge of the cerebral cortex. This powerful method has been reported to be just short of miraculous for those suffering from neurological issues.

Scalp acupuncture is used mainly for neurological disorders of the central nervous  system. It is most often used for stroke, paralysis, tremors, neuropathies, phantom  limb pain, PTSD, numbness, motor speech disorders, problems with balance and coordination, restless leg syndrome, tinnitus, and developmental issues involving the brain and CNS.

It uses classical Chinese needle technique of strong and frequent stimulation over the cerebral cortex. Needles are retained for approximately 30 mins and patient are often asked to try and move the effected limbs during the treatment.

It should be noted that scalp acupuncture has a reputation for being a physical  acupuncture technique. This means you will most likely feel the needles being inserted and manipulated. For some people, it might create some mild discomfort, but most will feel sensations but not pain.

Scalp acupuncture enjoys a very good reputation for treating stroke victims in China. It is often said that their country needs less wheelchairs because of this technique. I personally have seen it greatly increase the functionality of limbs and dramatically help with balance. Now that I am incorporating this approach, I expect  to see some phenomenal results in the clinic with neurological disorders.

Scalp acupuncture is relatively new to the United States, so one may have to search around to find a practitioner. However, because the individuals who need treatment  are often without any other option in Western medicine, it is very much worth the  effort to find an acupuncturist who knows this technique. It could be exactly what  they need to improve their condition!
